Review: Sobe Botanicals

5 May

Sobe Botanicals is one of those companies that I’ve known about for a long time, and have meant to order from for a long time, but just… didn’t.  I don’t know why.   I’ve read nothing but good reviews, and the products always looked lovely, it’s just… I clearly suck.  Forgive me.

In an attempt to maintain some cosmetic dignity, I cruised over to Sobe’s Etsy shop and instantly started mentally spending ever red cent to my name.   Since that would probably get me in trouble with the hubs, I, with great restraint, ordered only a few items.  I picked up a sample pack of duochrome blushes (!!!), a Cheek and Lip Color, and a GothLip Stix. It was hard to pare down an order because there are so many different products listed, and they all look fantastic.  I am dying to try some of Sobe’s foundation!  One thing to note about Sobe Botanicals: while there is some mineral makeup, this is not a mineral makeup company.  The products are cruelty-free and many are vegan-friendly.

Owner Lex is a really sweet person and I enjoyed the small conversations we had over Etsy.  My order arrived very quickly, packaged in a leopard print bag and tied with a red ribbon.  She tossed in two shadow samples as well.

The blushes are beautiful.  The duochrome is slight, but apparent in all the colors.  It’s subtle, which is a good thing, because these blushes are hella shimmery.  If you prefer matte blushes, you might want to give these a pass.  I love the shimmer in these, because they impart a lovely glow.  These are swatched on bare skin, applied heavily on the left and blended out on the right.  Be sure to click the picture to see a larger version.

The lip stix is amazing!  It’s a soft, super glossy, very pigmented purple, and I love it!  I really packed it on for the swatch.  I swear it doesn’t apply streaky even though it looks it in the photo.  The cheek and lip color is so pretty.  It has a red-purple shift.  I’m pale enough that a light touch is necessary for the cheeks, but it blends out beautifully even on my very white skin and would look striking on a person of color.  I really love this on the lips.

I think it’s very safe to say that I will be a repeat customer at Sobe Botanicals.  It’s also fair to say that I will be very broke because of it.  For some reason, that makes me rather happy, and isn’t that what good makeup is all about?

I’m a big fan of SoBe’s rice powder, but I’ve admittedly never tried any of her colours for eyes or cheeks or even lips. But every time I unwrap the “ooak” shadows my brain reads “Oak” shadows and I have to spend five minutes rationalizing why they don’t look remotely oaky at all.

LOL It took a few moments for my brain to register that no, the two colors weren’t mislabeled (how are they both oak?), and also there was an extra O in there!

She was great to talk with. Have you tried Sobe’s foundation?

  1. Sobe Botanicals swatches - September 22, 2011

[...] 22 Sep I just haven’t found a good way to swatch these little multi-taskers from Sobe Botanicals, but the Cheek & Lip Colors are phenomenal.  I use them solely as lip colors, since I’m not big on non-powdered cheek colors, but I tried to blend them out a little on one side so you could see how they sheer out.  Unfortunately, this wasn’t the greatest way to showcase them.  The formula varies depending on color- some are creamier and other are more firm, so they didn’t sheer uniformly.  This wouldn’t be a problem on a larger area like the cheek, but on the limited space of my arm, it didn’t work so well.  Lesson learned.  My original review can be found here.
