Disappointment with Sassy Minerals (a kinda sorta review and look)

24 Jun

Every so often, I go through the box I keep under the sink, into which I toss any product that doesn’t meet my expectations.  Pulling these duds out to try again after some time has passed sometimes yields a product that makes me wonder why I ever discarded it to begin with.  Sometimes, I can’t remember exactly why something is in the box.  More often than not, another use reminds me.

I ordered from Sassy Minerals back when they first opened and Gasoline Rainbow was getting a lot of raves (maybe 2 years ago?).  As par with my first order at most companies, I chose samples of foundation, blush, and eyeshadows, including the hyped Gasoline Rainbow.  I didn’t find a foundation match and wasn’t impressed with the formula, but couldn’t remember exactly why all the other Sassy samples were in the junk box.  Going through it today, I unscrewed the lid from Break The Silence, a dark greyed blue with bright purple and blue sparkles and was wowed.  I wanted to wear the color in the jar more than anything.  Hoping it was a case where I’d be asking myself, “What the what?  Why’d I toss this?”, I dug out the other Sassy Minerals colors and did a quick face.

…And remembered why they were in the reject box.  Although these colors look stunning in the jar, they are incredibly underwhelming on the face.  The colors apply decently enough, but they look SO blah after seeing how they shimmer and shine in the jar.  I’m not saying this makeup is awful, but I have similar colors in other brands that completely floor me with their beauty.  Sassy didn’t have that wow factor.  Break The Silence, for example, showed no sign of the gorgeous sparkles and instead applied as a satin with a slight sheen.  I even applied it over Pixie Epoxy, trying to get the shinies to show, and finally resorted to using some Aromaleigh glitter on top to get a bit of shine.  Psych, again with beautiful purple sparkles in the jar, applied as just another silverish-grey, and Merlin’s Ball, which appears to be a stunning silver, was just a lighter shade of Psych.  Phenom was the only one that even looked close, and I have that same shade in better formulas from other companies.  The cheek color, Plus One- a light peachy beige, was the only product that wasn’t a total letdown for me, but wasn’t in any way unique or interesting enough to justify a full size, let alone carry the weight of the company.

The only positive I found to my Sassy Minerals order is that the samples come in jars, but that doesn’t help when the colors in them are bland.  These are going back into the box and I have no plans to order from Sassy in the future.

This is actually the first I’ve heard of Sassy in…a long time. I saw a few reviews when Gasoline Rainbow was THE thing, but their website sort of turned me off (it’s kind of…clinical?) and I haven’t even thought of them since. But I’m sort of glad that’s the case after reading this. ALSO glad to know I’m not the only one disappointed by often-hyped products. The eye looks great, but if those aren’t the “in-jar” colour you see in person and packed-and-painted on in addition, I can see how it could be incredibly disappointing.

Yeah, I didn’t like the website either. It was very impersonal, like a template that had nothing to do with the product. So many hyped products let me down, most recently Cosette’s Cosmetics Cosmic collection, and I really don’t think I’m that hard to impress. I wonder if it’s a case of people raving because they’re afraid to speak up and say that they really think?

[...] it is, both in the jar and in a swatch, and that is so incredibly refreshing.  It’s a huge disappointment for me to purchase colors that look completely different in the jar than they do on my face. [...]
