Review: CoverGirl Natureluxe Gloss Balm

18 Aug

My first thought when using CoverGirl Natureluxe Gloss Balm was that it reminded me of Chapstick.  I don’t know if people even use Chapstick anymore; the waxy mess hasn’t touched my lips in years.  I think I am spoiled by my nice vegan indie lip balms because a lot of conventional products now feel awful on my lips.  I borrowed a Blistex balm from my husband and it felt disgusting, and even a pricey Kiss My Face balm felt unreasonably thick and waxy.  I had higher hopes for this, but I’m really not sure why.

I swatched it on my hand first.  The color (235 Grenache) is beautiful, a very pale, shimmery pink that lightly dresses up lips but wouldn’t compete with a bright summery eye.  I liked the swatched color so much that I instantly removed the lip color I was wearing to try it on.  On my natural lip color, it is hard to see the subtle pink, but the shimmer is just visible enough to give some interest.  However, the waxy, heavy feel of this gloss balm annoyed me.  I am used to balms that settle into the lips and lightly moisturize.  This felt more like a coating that sat on top of the lips until it finally wore off.  It felt too heavy for a balm, too waxy for a gloss, and even too thick for a lipstick.

The ingredients on this balm show lots of moisturizing butters, but for whatever reason, it didn’t feel particularly moisturizing on my lips.  The waxiness bothered me so much that in almost every instance that I wore it, I ended up removing it and replaced it with a different lipstick or balm.  The only thing this has going for it, in my opinion, is the SPF 15, and I can get that from other lip products.  It does wear decently for a good length of time, considering it’s a balm, but when you hate the feel that’s not really a positive.

I received this product free through BzzAgent, but it seems to retail for $5.99+.  Personally, I’d recommend spending that money on a lip balm from Morgana Cryptoria, which has better moisturizing properties, a much larger color selection, and amazing color payoff.

I completely agree with you on this balm. It does feel a bit heavy. And how do they justify calling it a “gloss” balm. Not all that glossy in my opinion. But the color I have is pretty. It does wear well. But I would agree with you that investing in a Morgana Cryptoria balm would be a better option! Thanks for the review!

You’re welcome. I love my Morgana balms, I have swatches and a review coming up soon.

Yeah, I just can’t wear commercial balms anymore either. My OHWTO balm has totally ruined every other balm in the world (except Morgana balms, but those are in their own special coloured-balm subcategory).

You’d think that for a line called Nature Luxe they’d focus more on making natural, good-for-you products and less on regurgitating things we’ve pretty much all ready seen, just in green packaging.

No matter how many OHWTO balms I have, I need more. This CoverGirl line is just another form of greenwashing. Sad, because they could have done it so much better.

I was actually quite happy with the color Grenache as it was a “my lips but better” sort of color… but then again, I have never tried a Morgana lip balm. (Although I did order some lip products not too long ago so when I get back from Colorado, I’m hoping they are there!) I suppose we shall see if once I experience the Morgana lip product, if it will make me change my tune about the NatureLuxe. ;-)

I love the Morgana balms for color and OHWTO for normal balm. Morgana’s got such a great color selection!

I just picked up one of these tubes today, in Spice, and I love it so much. I wonder if the finish/gloss varies by shade, because mine is glossy and moisturizing. It’s definitely a bit heavy, but I wouldn’t call it waxy.

It’s possible they do vary. I only tried the one, and was not impressed enough to try a second at the price. I’m glad you’re enjoying yours!
