Quick Linnaeus EOTD

27 Jul

My bathroom has the worst lighting in the world, but the natural light is nonexistent thanks to a line of thunderstorms that will make sunlight scarce for the next three days.  Consequently, I’m not doing a full face photo, but I wanted to share this eyeshadow look.  It’s very washed out – I can’t figure out why my skin looks so dark but my makeup so light- but I cracked open my new Linnaeus Cosmetics shadows today and had to wear one.

This is Linnaeus Cosmetics Blue Meanie, which is a lovely greyed teal, paired with Aromaleigh Moth on the lid and Bokeh Face Glass Slipper on the browbone.  Glass Slipper reminds me of a more transparent Moth and makes the best ever highlight shade.  The green sparkle in Moth perfectly complements the blue-green sparkle and shimmer of Blue Meanie.  I added the tiniest bit of Linnaeus Cosmetics Show Off (purple) to the outer corner of the Blue Meanie to add depth, but of course you can’t see it in this horribly lighted pic.  Show Off is also lining the lower lashes.  I wish I could get natural light because this look is beautiful- Blue Meanie is an amazingly gorgeous color.  I’m going to have to recreate this look and snap a photo once the sun comes out of hiding.

Review: CoverGirl Natureluxe Liquid Silk Foundation

27 Jul

I received this CoverGirl Natureluxe Liquid Silk Foundation free through BzzAgent as part of CoverGirl’s word of mouth advertising campaign.  I purposely held off on reviewing it during that time because, frankly, I don’t like this foundation at all.

Despite being CoverGirl, whom I tend to dislike because everything breaks my skin out (and I am not comfortable with their business practices either), I was excited to try this because it had gotten good reviews from a few bloggers I like to read.  I knew whatever color BzzAgent sent had a very small chance of actually matching my skin, but I figured I’d wear it around the house and if I liked the finish and quality, I could always pick my own color at CVS.

To date, there has been exactly one product I’ve liked from CoverGirl, and that’s the Lash Blast mascara.  This foundation did nothing to change my mind about the company.  Firstly, it mentions that “hint of jojoba extract and cucumber water, give flawless, luxurious coverage with a barely there feel”.  I had expected to see the cucumber and jojoba far down on the ingredients list, which is what most companies do when jumping on the “natural green” bandwagon.  Surprisingly, they’re pretty close to the top- cucumber water is third after the active ingredients, and jojoba is about halfway down.  Still, neither of these did anything to give a “barely there feel”.  I felt this foundation.  In fact, I felt it in a way I usually don’t feel foundation!  I would say this feels more like a heavier BB cream- I applied this to one half of my face and did the other half in Skinfood Aloe BB cream and couldn’t tell a difference in feel/weight once it was blended.

This foundation has a very strong scent.  It’s a “perfumey” scent that is so synthetic and strong that I wonder what it is meant to cover up.  Something that strong was added for a reason; I can’t think of a single foundation I’ve tried that is so strongly scented.  Again, this reminds me very much of Skinfood Aloe, even though the scents are not similar.  The smell did not dissipate once applied, so I kept catching the scent for almost an hour after application.  My husband also remarked on the scent.  Fail.  Total, all-around fail.  I do not want people noticing the smell of my makeup.  Ugh.

The finish wasn’t bad.  It started out rather sticky feeling, but as it was blended turned into the silky feel promised in the product information.  It smoothed out and looked pretty without being streaky, and settled into a not-quite-matte finish.  The color, of course, was a complete disaster on my skin, but I expected that.  (I was sent 330 Chamois.  From the website, I think I’d be a 305 Alabaster.) I had expected this foundation to be sheer coverage after reading all the copy that was sent with it, and was surprised to see that it was at least medium coverage, which explains the weight a little better.  This covered most of the flaws on my skin, and a little concealer evened out the dark circles under my eyes.  (Of course, I was totally orange.  I was rocking ganguro face!  I was expecting the UPS man to show up; he always knocks when I’m testing makeup.  To his credit, he never asks why I have on lopsided makeup or why my arm is rainbow striped.  Bless his heart.)  It wore decently for a drugstore foundation.  I got 4-5 hours out of it before it became clear that I needed to reapply.  And here is where my biggest problem with this foundation comes up.  When I say “became clear that I needed to reapply”, I mean this.  One minute the foundation looked nice.  The next, it looked gross.  It happened that fast.  It separated with astonishing speed, and it wasn’t just a few patchy areas here and there.  The whole face looked blotchy.  Sometimes, when this happens with other products, rubbing gently tends to smooth the product back into the skin, but not this time.  It was reapplication or nothing.  This is probably because my skin is oily, but eeeew.  I’ve got no eloquence for what happened.  It was straight up yuck, gross, grotty, ew, disgusting, blech, gnarly, nasty, UGH.

Oh, and it broke me out, to boot.

Will I be buying my own CoverGirl Natureluxe Liquid Silk Foundation?  Not on your life.  Other people love it- they probably don’t have the oily, acne-prone skin I do, because it does have a lovely finish and would most likely work well for someone with drier skin.  But on me it was a total, complete, unmitigated, perfumed disaster.  Read on for photos. Review: Etude House Fresh Cherry Tint

26 Jul

I’ve had some hits and misses with Korean brand Etude House.  I stumbled on these Fresh Cherry Tints quite by accident.  I included them in a larger Etude House order thinking they were lip gloss.  But Etude House Fresh Cherry Tints are not what I expected… well, not exactly.

Etude House Fresh Cherry Tints come in three colors, red, pink, and peach (I only have the first two).  They are on the small side, with the entire container standing about the height of a lipstick, and most of that being lid.  However, this little package holds a lot of product.  Each product is 9.5 g/.33 oz, as opposed to a MAC lipglass, which is 4.8 g/.17 oz.  The top of the container screws off and attached is a doe-foot applicator.  So far, all’s normal.

The product swipes on nicely.  It’s not totally even at first stroke, the same as most any lipgloss I’ve used, but it’s easy to even it out.  The texture is on the thicker side, like a gloss but decidedly less sticky.  It’s more soft and creamy, with a lovely sheen.  The gloss portion is not long lasting, however, the best feature of this product comes when the gloss is worn away or wiped off.  The Fresh Cherry Tints are really a lipstain disguised as a gloss.  Unlike most lipstains I’ve tried, these are not overly phony looking or excessively drying.  Even the red makes the lips look gorgeous and well-colored but not in-your-face-obvious.  I love these topped with a bit of gloss or a balm to add a little slickness to the color.  I am able to easily get 6-8 hours of wear from the tints during a normal day, which includes several meals and copious amounts of lip balm.  It fades evenly so there’s no obnoxious ring around the outer edges of the lips, and a good eye-and-lip remover wipes away the remaining stain.

Do I love these?  YES!  They’re my hot weather go-to product when I want to look polished but not overdone.  I wish they came in more colors!  I purchased these from EBay seller ideaseller_kr for $8.69 each, which included shipping.  Read on for photos.

Review: Chagrin Valley Organic Cream Deodorant

23 Jul

Like many other beauty junkies, even once I find an item I love, I try out alternatives because I’m often looking for that elusive “something better”.  Sometimes I find it and it become a Holy Grail item.  More often than not, I’m met with disappointment.  I’m happy to say that this was not one of those times.

Chagrin Valley is a company that I’ve purchased from for years.  Their shampoo bars are one of my HG items, beating out every other shampoo I’ve ever tried, liquid or bar.  I gave one away in my recent giveaway and the winner contacted me a bit later to say that she loves the shampoo bar, too.  The company is not one of the big names in the indie market.  They don’t have great copy or a well-branded presence.  What they do have are AMAZING products at an awesome price.  I checked out another indie company briefly for shampoo bars.  Not only did their bars contain ingredients I found questionable, the price was double what Chagrin Valley charged, for a bar half the size!  But this is not a review of CV’s shampoo bars.  I tell you all this to point out that when CV releases a new product, I AM SO THERE.

I’ve used natural deodorants for about ten years.  It started with the warning that conventional antiperspirant may be linked to breast cancer.  Breast cancer has decimated my family.  Three aunts and two cousins have passed away from it.  It doesn’t run in our family so much as charge blindly through.  No woman in my family has beaten it.  Because of this, I take preventative care very seriously.  When that warning came out, I did not even finish my stick of Degree.  I tossed it and never looked back.  Research later came out to say that maybe it doesn’t cause breast cancer.  No one is sure.  But there is no harm in natural deodorants, so better safe than sorry.

My initial foray into natural deodorants was disappointing.  I don’t mind being somewhat damp.  I do mind smelling.  Some of the brands I tried, such as Tom’s of Maine Apricot, actually made me smell worse, which was totally missing the point.  I finally settled on a product by Oyin Handmade called Funk Butter, which I used for several years.  It worked extremely well, but had three drawbacks.  One- Oyin Handmade had flat rate shipping.  Even if the tins of Funk Butter were only $4.50, shipping was another $8.00.  Two- Oyin Handmade is SLOW to ship.  Weeks and weeks slow, in some cases.  Three- Funk Butter is thick, and somewhat abrasive.  Smearing it on would cause raw skin, so I had to apply a coating of coconut oil first.  This worked well, but it was an extra step.  Still, FB worked better than anything else I had come across, until now.

Chagrin Valley’s owner Ida was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, and decided to formulate an Organic Cream Deodorant because of the possible link.  I ordered the product as soon as it became available.  The price, at $7.25, is a little higher than Oyin Handmade’s, but I love everything I’ve ever used from CV so I added it into an order of shampoo bars.  I began using it the day it arrived but wanted to wait until hot weather hit to review it.  After our “killer heatwave” with a heat index of 110 degrees F, I feel confident in reviewing this product.

The first thing I noticed about CV’s formulation is that it is certified organic.  It’s not easy (or cheap!) to become certified, and most indie companies never bother, but Ida has taken that extra step.  I felt good giving this company my money before; now I feel even better.  This is important even more than ever in the indie community, after being betrayed by unethical companies and sold harmful products.  Chagrin Valley is trustworthy.

The consistency of the product, like Ida says, is silky.  It’s not sticky or so thick that it can’t be applied easily.  It feels similar to semi-solidified coconut oil, not runny but easily workable.  I noticed no difficulty applying it, and using it on its own did not cause the raw skin that Funk Butter did.  I can apply this right after shaving with no irritation.  One thing I always liked about Funk Butter is how long-lasting it is.  I could wear it while running, with no issues except a bit of chafing abrasion.  CV’s Organic Cream Deodorant works every bit as well, even maybe better because of the lack of irritation.  This is a workhorse product.  I can apply it right out of the shower and wear it all day- even during the heatwave- without worrying about any odor.  It is simply the best natural deodorant I’ve ever used- and I’ve used a lot.

I chose the scent “Citrus Blossom”, which includes essential oils of bergamot, pink grapefruit and petitigrain.  Since grapefruit oil also has an additional antibacterial quality, I felt that it could only help in the… er… de-stinkification.  I like the scent of this product.  It isn’t overwhelmingly citrusy, but very naturally scented.  It smells a bit like a citronella candle in the tin, but that does not carry over once it is applied.  To describe the scent in one word, I’d call it pleasant.  CV also has an unscented version, as well as Summer Rain, Woodland Breeze, and Mint Mist, for those who might not like the Citrus Blossom scent.

During my testing of this product, I did something I haven’t done in many years.  I put it up against a conventional antiperspirant.  Under one arm, I applied my CV Organic Cream Deodorant.  Under the other, some Secret Clinical Strength I received in the mail as a sample.  Every few hours, I did the “whiff test”.  Don’t make that face, you totally do it too.  Surprisingly, I found that I had MORE body odor scent with the Secret.  What little dampness appeared under the Secret arm mingled with the strong baby powder scent, which lead to a less-than-desirable smell.  It was, in one word, gross.  The CV arm had more dampness- it’s not an antiperspirant- but the only scent I detected was the citrusy scent of the product itself, which, as I mentioned before, I like.

The tin contains 2 oz of product, which will last for a LONG time.  The product photos were taken after using it ever day for three weeks, and I had barely dented the surface.  The amount shown on my finger is all it takes for one underarm.  I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that I get more than 6 months’ use from the tin, and if that is the case, this product becomes more economical than conventional antiperspirant.  I’ll report back once my tin is gone.

All in all, I love this product.  LOVE IT.  It has become my HG deodorant and I’ll continue to purchase it.  Who may not like it?  Well, vegans, since this does contain a small amount of beeswax.  Ida has always tried to be vegan friendly, and the original formulation did not contain the beeswax, so she might be amenable to removing it for a special order if she is emailed.  (This is speculation on my part.  But her customer service is AWESOME and it can’t hurt to try.)  Also, people who want bone-dry underarms might not like this, since this is only a deodorant.  However, while there was more dampness than the conventional antiperspirant, it wasn’t that much more, so I would encourage those people to give this a try if they’re at all curious about what I consider to be a superior product to anything you can buy on the drugstore shelves.

Review: Skinfood Salmon Darkcircle Concealer Cream

22 Jul

Korean brand Skinfood rocks my world.  Their products are good, and they are inexpensive, even with the third-party seller markup.  They’re not available in the U.S. except through online retailers and EBay, but even with the markup, Skinfood costs about the same as drugstore products with much better performance.

I am currently loving Skinfood Salmon Darkcircle Concealer Cream in #1.  My dark circles have long annoyed me, being visible even when I’m well-rested, and impossible to cover up with my usual concealers.  So much has been said about salmon colored concealers (like Eve Pearl) that I was curious to try one, when this gem caught my eye.  It turns out that “salmon”, in this case, refers to the presence of salmon oil in the product rather than the color, although it definitely has an orange hue to it which makes it very effective for covering those pesky blue circle.  The deciding factor was the price- at only $10.00, it was worth a shot.

I purchased on EBay from seller ideaseller_kr, whom I have used before and highly recommend.  My concealer arrived quickly.  Shipping from Korea is very fast compared to other Asian countries, and I often get mail from Korea faster than I do mail from the West Coast.  As usual, it was packaged carefully and arrived in impeccable condition.  The first thing I noticed about the product is that it is unscented.  Part of me wondered if there would be any sort of “fishy” scent, but there is none.  It also looks more orange than it does in photographs.  The texture is thick and creamy, and while I realized right away that it would cover dark circles with no problem, I wondered if it would look orange on my skin.  I shouldn’t have worried; the orange blends nicely into the skin and the result is a bright, but not apparent, undereye area.

The creamy texture could have been a concern, as a lot of creamy products tend to migrate into the crease I have under my eyes, but the concealer stayed put with a light dusting of powder.  Skinfood also makes a companion product, a salmon powder, but I found that the concealer alone is enough to camouflage my dark circles.  I have been wearing this concealer religiously since it arrived- check the FOTD’s- and so little is needed that this pot will last for many years.

Skinfood Salmon Darkcircle Concealer Cream comes in two shades.  #1 is the lighter of the two.  Continue on to see the product shots.

Sympathetic Chakra – LOTD

21 Jul

I’ve been doing a lot of neutral looks lately, so I wanted to add some more color.  I had mentioned to Jynx (of Spellbound By Jynx) in an email that I wanted to wear Compassion (a lovely teal) and possibly pair it with Third Eye (purple!), so today that’s what I did.  I think SbJ’s shadows are fantastic, as evidenced by the fact that I’ve worn them pretty much every day since receiving them.  Also, the new Sobe Botanticals Cheek & Lip Colors that I received are fantastic!  I have a swatch post of them already queued up, so keep an eye out for it.
